2015 Wall of Fame Inductees Celebrated

Lakehead Athletics’ Wall of Fame induction ceremony welcomed six more individuals, and one men’s hockey team into a place of honour to last the ages on Saturday.

Lakehead University athletes, alumni, executives and personnel of all sorts were out in full force at the Hangar to welcome the new inductees.

The individual inductees are:

Women’s Inductees: Rena Viehbeck (nordic skiing 2002-07) and Lynn Simmer-Black (basketball 1970-74)
Men’s Inductees: Mike Thomas (wrestling 1995-00) and Don Holmstrom (basketball 1966-69)
Builders: Francis Clayton (wrestling Coach 1985-2005) and Lou Pero (basketball player, 66-69, men’s coach 89-2003, manager of student development and women’s assistant coach, 2003-present)

Team: Men’s Hockey, 2005-06 (below)

There was also a tribute to the ‘Builders Behind the Builders’, three administrative assistants whose service collectively spans nearly all 50 years of Lakehead University’s illustrious athletic history. These three exceptional administrators are Christine Zilberman, Sharon Kozak, and Lana Rizzuto.

The ceremony featured speeches from Lakehead President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Brian Stevenson, Alumni Association Vice-President Dr. Michel Beaulieu, special guest Mirella Zanatta, student athlete representative Vanessa Masters, and all of the inductees, along with closing remarks from Tom Warden, Athletic Director.

There was also vignettes presented, with short interviews with the inductees featuring their memories of Lakehead Univeristy, the special moments in competition, and their advice to inspire the next generation of Lakehead Student Athletes.
