Box Score

The Lakehead women’s basketball team (0-1) lost their first game of the OUA regular season tonight, 77-61 to the Queen’s Gaels in Kingston, ON.

Lakehead was on the ball early, out-rebounding the Gaels on the glass, allowing for second chance points and fast break opportunities. The Gaels weren’t able to score a basket until mid-way through the first frame. After being down 9-0, Queen’s managed to take their first lead.

Lakehead closed out the quarter with a one point, 19-18 lead over the Gaels.

Queen’s started the second quarter on a hot-streak outscoring Lakehead 19-10. Closing the half, the Gaels played better defence, finishing hard on the boards and opening up their own fast break opportunities. The Gaels turned the table in the second quarter and opened up a 48-33 lead heading into the second half.

The fourth quarter started with both teams exchanging baskets. Lakehead outscored Queen’s throughout the final stanza, but it was too little too late for the Wolves as the Gaels held on for a 77-61 victory.

“Good start tonight but we really struggled with our offence in the second which lead to poor shots leading to easy transition scores for Queens. Proud of Lily tonight, she was great. Tianna settled out defense off the bench and I thought she was our best bench player tonight. We’ll need to regroup for a tough York squad tomorrow.” – Coach Jon Kreiner

Lily Gruber- Schulz led the Wolves with 17 points, 10 rebounds and Leashja Grant had 15 points, 10 rebounds.

Next game for the Thunderwolves is tomorrow at 6:00pm against York.
