The Lakehead women’s basketball team lost, 75-58, to the Regina Cougars today at the Regina Cougar Classic.

Regina came out strong against the Thunderwolves and pushed a small lead at the end of the first that put themselves up 25-14 after the first ten minutes. Lakehead adjusted and was able to compete with the Cougars during the second quarter but still were down 41-26 at the half.

The Thunderwolves were unable to make up for their first-half mistakes and although Regina only outscored the Thunderwolves by just two in the second half, Lakehead ultimately lost 75-58.

Last year, the Cougars won their third Canada West title and a U SPORTS bronze medal and continue to be one of the top programs in the country.

“After a tough first quarter, where we took too long to adjust to Regina’s quickness, I felt we settled in nicely and competed at a good level against a quality opponent. Regina showed us many of our weaknesses tonight, things we’ve been talking about all preseason and our players had a good first-hand experience on what it takes to get good looks and defend at a high level. We have a ways to go but we look forward to continuing to get better tomorrow against Lethbridge,” said Head Coach Jon Kreiner.

Each team made 9 threes during the game and the Thunderwolves only had 2 less made field goals against the Cougars but were outshot at the free throw line making only 9 compared to Regina’s 22.

Leashja Grant had 15 points, 13 rebounds and 3 steals tonight alongside Karissa Kajorinne who had 12 points, going 4-10 from the three. Nikki Ylagan also had 11 points, 3 steals.

The Thunderwolves take on the University of Lethbridge tomorrow at 5pm Central standard time.
