Andrea Scores 24 in Loss to McMaster

Hugh Mullally | Basketball (W)

Katelyn Andrea started strong, and despite putting together a sparkling game, saw her team drop a 73-64 decision to the McMaster Marauders Saturday evening.

K_Andrea_action2Andrea came out of the blocks on Saturday with purpose, scoring the first 10 points for Lakehead, and hit both her free throws to complete respective three-point plays. Andrea put together a complete game, totalling 24 points and 10 points.
Marauder Hilary Hanaka was a woman possessed from three-point range in the first half, hitting her first three shots in a row and going 4-of-6 in the first half. She finished with a team-high 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting.

Halftime score was 34-32 for McMaster.

As the game wore on, Lakehead showed determination in making McMaster work for everything, while pounding the ball inside to their bigs. Sophomore post August Ricketts (photo below) came off the bench to score 10 points with 8 rebounds in 14 minutes of work. Fellow post Gillian Lavoie added 9 points and 10 rebounds.

Although Lakehead shot well from the free throw line for the majority of the game, 7 misses in the final quarter proved costly.

Lakehead threatened late in the fourth quarter but would never take the lead. McMaster’s veterans were able to seal the game with smart ball movement and a sharp touch from the free throw line.

T-Wolf Jerika Baldin did a good job moving the ball on offense, dishing out 11 assists to go with 13 points.

Coach Jon Kreiner:

“Much better today. We improved our rebounding and valued the ball better, it still needs improvement, and we found scoring in the paint. Andrea stepped up hugh tonight and our posts did a much better job doing what we need them to do. Jerika Baldin was great tonight orchestrating the offense with her own double double.”

Lakehead’s next game is on the road against York then Queen’s.
