Grand Marais’ Lily Gruber-Schulz Commits to Lakehead

| Basketball (W), News

Coach Jon Kreiner of the women’s basketball team made his first recruiting announcement of the off-season today: Lily Gruber-Schulz, of Grand Marais, Minnesota, and Cook County High.

LilyGruberSchulz_recruit1“I’m extremely excited that Lily has chosen Lakehead University to continue her education and join the Thunderwolves,” says Kreiner. “Lily has a tremendous amount of upside, versatility and passion for the game. She’s experienced playing every position, is a hard worker, has a high basketball IQ, and most importantly, has character. Lily fit in with our team right from the get go and I look forward to working with her for the next five years.”

The 6’0″ guard/forward has put up impressive numbers in her high school career as a Cook County Viking, averaging 16 points and 10 rebounds with 3 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks per game. All this on top of solid shooting percentages from the floor (47%) and the free throw line (71%).

Gruber-Schulz is also a stand-up student, actively participating in student government at Cook County and maintains a 3.78 (out of 4) Grade Point Average.

“I spent a lot of time thinking about my plans for college, and after my visit to Thunder Bay in February, I knew that Lakehead was the best choice for me!” exclaims Gruber-Schulz. “They have a great coaching staff and I really liked everyone on the team. I’m excited to continue my education and my career on the court. I know Lakehead will help me succeed in both. I’m looking forward to being a Thunderwolf next season!”

Kelly Senty, Lily’s high school coach, is enthused with Lily’s decision and is intent on following her university career at Lakehead.

“It has been an honor and joy to work with Lily through this basketball season,” says Senty. “Her decision to attend Lakehead and join the Thunderwolves family compliments her aspirations as an athlete. Having a Cook County graduate play at the next level is exciting and the girls here at Cook County are already planning a trip to Thunder Bay to watch and support her. Lily will find success in all that she does and I look forward to watching her continue her athletic and academic career at Lakehead.”
