Thunderwolves Ready to Kick Off Homecoming Weekend

The Lakehead men’s and women’s basketball teams are back in action this Thursday and Friday as they play two non-conference games to celebrate Homecoming weekend. The women’s team face the Algoma Thunderbirds followed by the men taking on the Regina Cougars.

Women’s Basketball

“The first games of the new season always brings excitement and anticipation for both our fans and players. With eight new players and seven rookies, there is a lot that we need to figure out before league play. These games will give us a chance to see where we are at, and what we need to work on,” says head coach Jon Kreiner.

The Thunderbirds finished off the season 2-22 last year and lost to the Thunderwolves back to back 77-41 and 84-52.

“Algoma is also very young and they have a group that works hard and they can really shoot the three. Our goal this week is to develop our offense and defense to a point where we are playing consistently at both ends of the floor. We are also looking forward to our homecoming events which are always a great way to kick off the year.”

Men’s Basketball

“After a long off-season, we’re looking forward to getting a chance to play a talented and well-coached Regina team which should be a good test for us to start the year,” says head coach Ryan Thomson. “With a number of new student-athletes expected to play roles for us this year, it will be great to get out there and compete against someone in a different jersey while also trying to improve individually and collectively as a unit. It’s an exciting week for Lakehead University and our two contests should be no different”

Last year, the Cougars were 11-9, finishing 6th in the Canada West before losing to a tough Lethbridge team at the Canada West Quarterfinals.

Both men’s and women’s teams are excited to showcase their new recruits as well as returning Thunderwolves as they are ready to make moves in the OUA this season.

Homecoming

As returning alumni and friends are welcomed back to campus for Homecoming, there are multiple events for everyone to enjoy including the Lakehead basketball and hockey games, Alumni Awards Dinner, Special Ceremony, and Athletic Awards.

This year, Lakehead is excited that at the Homecoming Awards Ceremony, there will be a special presentation for our new Lakehead University President, Dr. Moira McPherson, and for Ron MacLean (Hockey Night In Canada), who will be receiving his honorary degree from Lakehead University. Only those registered may attend.
MacLean will be playing in a scrimmage game at the Fort William Gardens on Saturday at 4:30 pm where fans (who purchase a ticket to the hockey game) can watch and have a chance to get his autograph. He will then drop the puck to open the Thunderwolves men’s hockey game against Lethbridge (7PM).
