Thunderwolves on the Road to Western

The Lakehead men’s and women’s basketball teams are on the road this weekend to take on the Western Mustangs in a weekend double header.

Women’s Basketball (8-4)

Coach Jon Kreiner:

“Western is a very strong team with a great starting line up. They have one of the best guards in the country in Mackenzie Puklicz and one of the best front courts in the country with Curran and Heine. Horst is shooting the ball very well for them and Graham is a very athletic guard that can cause troubles. We will need to be ready to defend and rebound this weekend. I think our defense is very inconsistent but improving. We will need to stay focused on that and make Western work hard for their looks.”

Western has a record of 7-5 and is on a 3 game winning streak. Mackenzie Puklicz averages 17.6 points per game, ranking fourth in the OUA.

The Thunderwolves had two strong wins over Guelph this past weekend where Leashja Grant put up a combined 63 points.

Men’s Basketball (1-11)

Western (6-6) is 2nd in the OUA West, coming off a big win against Laurier last week. The Mustangs have tough defense and are leading the league with the most steals per game (12).

“Western is a tough, disciplined team with the ability to make shots from 3. It will be a good test for us, getting on the road and playing a solid team, in their gym. We’re going to need to stay the course for the full 40 minutes both nights in order to put ourselves in a position to be successful” – Coach Ryan Thomson

The Wolves picked up their first win this past Saturday in a huge 87-67 victory over Guelph.
