Thunderwolves take on Laurentian and Nipissing

After a weekend off, the Lakehead men’s and women’s basketball teams are ready to take on Laurentian and Nipissing Universities this upcoming Friday and Saturday on the road.

Women’s Basketball (4-9)

Coach Kreiner:

“We are set to travel to Sudbury and North Bay to battle Laurentian and Nipissing. Laurentian is a tough place to play and they are a young team that plays hard for 40 minutes. They give up nothing easy and play to win every game they play, which makes them very dangerous. Emily Tinnes is a tough defender, good shooter and attacks the hoop hard. Laurentian also has some very good shooters and Coach Hurley does a great job preparing his team defensively.”

Laurentians (3-12) is on average scoring 55 points a game with Emily Tinnes averaging 10 points and 3 rebounds.

“Nipissing’s best player is Claire Abbott who has great range and is a smart player that can get hot. They mix it up defensively and force you to make good decisions. Nipissing has shown the potential to score in bunches at times this season so we will need to execute defensively and  play smart offensively.”

Nipissing (1-14) is fourth in the OUA North with their first win of the season being against Waterloo. Claire Abbott is averaging 12 points per game and has the potential to score 20 plus points in games, as she has done a few times already this season.

Men’s Basketball (3-10)

“We need to focus on the little details this week in practice in preparation for Laurentian and Nipissing. Both teams are playing with confidence and playing extremely hard. Every possession well need to be our best.” – Coach Furtado

Laurentian (6-9) and Nipissing (7-8) are both sitting behind Carleton and Ottawa in the OUA North. Laurentian is averaging 74 points per game and is ranked second for highest free throw percentage. Nipissing is an aggressive team with two players, Justin Shaver and Marcus Lewis, that both average 13 points.
