‘Wolves Take on Thunderbirds in OUA Season Opener

Lakehead basketball will open the OUA regular season this weekend against the Algoma University Thunderbirds in the Thunderdome. The women and men’s teams will play back to back on Saturday, November 5 at 6:00 and 8:00pm.

Women’ Basketball (7-4 non-conference)

“The last time we played Algoma we struggled to score in the first half but our defence kept us in it long enough to get the 23 point win” – Coach Kreiner

The Thunderwolves had a 60-37 win over Algoma in October with 4th year Cassandra Soulias leading her team with 12 points.

“Algoma is a much improved team that will be much stronger than that team we played in early October”, commented Coach Kreiner. “They play tough defence, shoot the ball well and never quit. Karissa Kajorinne, a local product, is a very strong player who can score in bunches and Karina Cole can really shoot the three. ”

Third-year Karina Cole comes from Alpena Community College in Michigan, where she averaged 22 points a game. Thunder Bays Karissa Kajorinne averaged 8 points per game last year for the Thunderbirds. Algoma is going into the weekend with 5-4 non-conference record.

“I am looking for our team to build on our successful play out west. Consistent work ethic, playing with energy and ball movement will be our focus.”

The ‘Wolves played at the HoopFest Tournament two weekends ago in Edmonton, AB where they came out with 2 wins and 1 loss against some tough university teams. The women will be looking to continue their momentum and capture their first win of the OUA regular season.

 

Men’s Basketball (2-6 non-conference)

“We are playing a very tough and physical Algoma team. We need to put in a great week of practice to prepare for what we are going to face,” comments Coach Furtado.

Last years match up between Lakehead and Algoma finished with the Thunderwolves winning 73-65 with Bacarius Dinkins scoring 27 points. Thunderbird Sean Clendinning averaged 13 point per game last year and is back for his fourth year. Algoma currently has a 6-5 non-conference record this season.

The ‘Wolves recently played at UBC where they faced 3 strong west coast teams. The men are ready to put their game experience and hard work to use, and start fresh going into the OUA season.
