Women’s basketball team completes another perfect weekend with close win

| Basketball (W), News

The Lakehead women’s basketball team finished another perfect weekend by defeating the York Lions 86-83 on Saturday night. The win puts Lakehead at 6-1, and in a good position to claim a top-10 national ranking.

“It was a battle from tip to buzzer,” Thunderwolves head coach Jon Kreiner said. “I was proud of our team building an 11-point lead with 4 minutes to go, but we really struggled in the last 2-3 minutes against their press. No scoring run went unanswered, and the largest margin of victory in any quarter was three. The Thunderwolves held a one-point lead at half.

“Full credit to York and their coaching staff for just how hard they have their team working and battling for 40 minutes,” Kreiner said. The York Lions pressured the Thunderwolves throughout the match, and Lakehead gave up 28 turnovers. “We can learn a lot from them and their work ethic,” Kreiner said.

Lakehead was led by Leashja Grant’s 29 points, but the Thunderwolves’ offense was truly a team effort, as they dished out 24 assists on the games 34 made field goals. Karissa Kajorinne again had a solid game, steadying the offense and maintaining poise on the floor. Tiffany Reynolds was also crucial in the victory, contributing 14 points, 5 rebounds, and a stifling defensive effort.

“I was very happy with Tiffany and her fourth-quarter play, and Karissa was great for us tonight when we needed someone to step up,” Kreiner said.

The Thunderwolves next face Ryerson and the University of Toronto at home in the Thunderdome on November 30th and December 1st, respectively.
