Women’s bball team heads west for non-conference play

| Basketball (W), News

Lakehead’s women’s basketball team will spend part of this holiday season on the prairies, as they head west for the University of Winnipeg Wesmen Classic to close out December. Lakehead takes its #9 national USPORTS ranking and a five-game win streak into the tournament.

“Being ranked in the top 10 is a great thing,” Thunderwolves head coach Jon Kreiner says. “I feel it is the reflection of the hard work we have put in that led to us defeating the USPORTS #2 [then Ryerson] and #4 [then Carleton] teams.”

Lakehead will face the team immediately ahead of them in the national top ten rankings.

“We will see USPORTS #8 Calgary in the first game of the University of Winnipeg Classic over the holidays,” Kreiner says. “They key for us is to be ready for each and every team we play as we now have a bit of a target on our back. Really that’s all the top 10 means at this point; everyone wants to defeat a top 10 team.”

Calgary heads into Winnipeg at 9-3, with a 7-game win streak. The Dinos play a well-rounded team game, but currently lead the CanWest division with an average of 13 steals per game.

Rounding out the rest of the field are: Algoma University, the University of Regina, Brandon University, the universities of both Winnipeg and Manitoba, and UBC-Okanagan.

The games begin on December 28th and take place over three days.

Thunderwolves basketball returns to OUA play in January with away games at the University of Guelph on January 4th and 5th, and will return to the Thunderdome for their first home games of 2019 to face the Windsor Lancers on January 11th and 12th.
