Thunderwolves Hoops Take on Badgers

Lakehead basketball will play their first road games of the regular season in St Catharines against the Brock Badgers this weekend.

Friday’s games will be played at Brock’s Bob Davis Gymnasium (6pm and 8pm) while Saturday’s games will take on an arena atmosphere at The Meridian Centre, with game times at 5pm and 7pm.

Saturday’s games are being advertised by the OUA as the largest-ever sporting event hosted by Brock Athletics in their 51-year history. Friday’s games at Brock are sold out, while Saturday’s games at the Meridian Centre, which holds over 5,300 fans, have a dwindling supply remaining and can be acquired via ticketmaster.

Lakehead Athletics is hosting a social event on Saturday on the club level of the Meridian Centre. All Lakehead parents, alumni and friends who purchase tickets to Saturday’s games are welcome to join Lakehead Athletics’ Director Tom Warden on the club level.

Lakehead Women (3-3)

The women’s team will face the Badgers (3-1, CIS #7), whose lineup features four players who have averaged over 10 points per game thus far. Kate Hapur is their leader, with 10.8 points and 9.0 rebounds per contest.

Brock will test Lakehead’s ability to box-out and rebound, as shown in their +10.8 rebounding margin through 4 OUA games, all on the road. Their only loss of the season came to the then #1 ranked McMaster Marauders by three points. In their three victories (over Algoma, York and Queen’s), their smallest margin of victory was 17. This will be Brock’s home opener weekend.

Coach Jon Kreiner:

“Brock is a very experienced and talented veteran team. Their core are 4th and 5th year seniors and they are playing very well this season. They’re a great transition team that can really run and score and a lot of that comes from their tenacious defense. They have a number of players that can score from both outside and inside making them very tough to contain. We will have a very tough challenge for us on the road so we will need to be prepared to take care of the ball, execute on offense and play smart defense.”

Lakehead Men (3-3)

The Thunderwolf men will also have to contend with a Top 10 team versus Brock (3-1, #4 CIS).

Third year Badger forward Dani Elgadi has put up impressive numbers thus far, with 22 points and 11 rebounds per game. It’s worth noting that all of his scoring comes from within the three-point line, with no attempts from outside the arc this season.

Brock won their first three games of the season before dropping an 87-81 decision to Queen’s in Kingston last week.

Coach Manny Furtado:

“It’s a great opportunity for us this weekend. We’re going against the #4 team in the country, on the road, Central division games, and add that it’s Brock’s home openers. It all sets up for a great experience for our guys.”
