‘Wolves Wrap up Regular Season on London-Windsor Swing

Lakehead Basketball completes its regular season on the road this weekend, as the Thunderwolves get set for the Western Mustangs in London on Friday, followed by the Windsor Lancers on Saturday. Please note game times on Saturday have been pushed back to 6:30 and 8:30pm.

Although the women’s team has been eliminated from playoff contention, this final weekend is about continuing to develop their core players while getting some experience for their bench as well.

Both Western (13-5) and Windsor (13-5) are playoff bound, but Saturday’s game in Windsor may serve as the focus for Lakehead, who had their campaign end last season in a loss to the Lancers.

Coach Jon Kreiner:

“Our ‘Big Three’ of Jerika, Bridget and Katelyn have had a great season thus far and we want to see them finish the season strong. Everyone’s going to play this weekend. This weekend we’d like to upset one of these teams, but it’s also an opportunity to play without any pressure in terms of playoffs, just go out there, work hard and have fun.”

The men’s team is on the playoff bubble, as the OUA Central will finish with the most parity of any division in the OUA. Two wins will guarantee a playoff berth, and could even push Lakehead into second place, depending on other outcomes this week. Essentially, Lakehead must win as many games as Guelph does this week to retain 3rd place in the OUA Central.

Western’s (9-9) success had been inextricably tied to that of 5th year Greg Morrow, who leads the OUA in scoring with 24pts/game. The return of Peter Scholtes (14ppg) gives Western another adept scorer with range.

Windsor (12-6) presents another potent offensive weapon in Alex Campbell, who’s 22 points per game have kept Windsor atop the OUA West division.

Coach Manny Furtado:

“This weekend is like every other weekend in the OUA. We’re facing 2 great opponents in Western and Windsor. This is a great challenge for our team to end the regular season, and we’ll see where things go from there.”
