The Lakehead Thunderwolves women’s basketball team’s first home game of 2020 was a success as they defeated the Laurentian Voyageurs 85-72 Friday night at the CJ Sanders Fieldhouse.
After tonight’s game, the Thunderwolves improve to 4-11, while the Voyageurs fall to 2-13, unable to snap their 10 game losing streak.
Despite the win, Thunderwolves head coach Jon Kreiner is still looking for some more improvements from his team.
“We really came ready to play but lost our focus,” said Kreiner.
“Sofía was amazing for us tonight and hit big shots when we needed them. We need to regroup for a tough Nipissing squad tomorrow.”
Sophomore Sofia Lluch finished the night leading the Thunderwolves with 24 points, six assists and 5 rebounds. Senior Nikki Ylagan was also strong for the Wolves, finishing with 16 points. Charlotte Clifford and Megan Looney each recorded seven rebounds to lead the Thunderwolves defensively.
Laurentian’s Héléna Lamoureux also finished 24 points and led the Voyageurs defensively with 11 rebounds.
The Thunderwolves will be back on the court Saturday. Jan 25 to face off against the Nipissing Lakers for their annual Think Pink game. The Thunderwolves will be selling T-Shirts and collecting donations at the game in support of the Northern Cancer Fund for Breast Cancer. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
