While the first half was a blowout, the second half did see some tough competition from the Bisons who narrowly lost the third and fourth quarters 16-14 and 13-12, respectively.
“We played a very good first quarter and got a good jump on Manitoba,” said coach Jon Kreiner. “Our pressure D was on point and we we able to get to the free throw line.”
The Thunderwolves were helped by pressure on the boards at both ends of the court. Forward, Amanda Miller, led the game with 12 rebounds—six offensive and six defensive, and scored a team-high 14 points off the bench in 19 minutes of court time.
Lakehead led 49-22 at the half.
In the end, the strength of the Lakehead offense shows in their stats, as they scored 27 per cent of their three-pointers and 35 per cent of their shots from the field. Compared to the Bisons’ 9 per cent beyond the arc and 23 per cent at short range.
Kreiner continues, “Cassandra was our spark today and Amanda Miller stepped up big in the post with August Ricketts unable to play.”
Cassandra Soulias finished with 10 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists, while Gillian Lavoie and Bridget O’Reilly helped out with 13 and 11 points each.
The women’s team wrap up their weekend in Winnipeg against the Algoma Thunderbirds tomorrow morning at 10am.
