The women’s basketball team completed a weekend sweep of opponents at U Manitoba’s Shoot for the Cure Invitational, as they defeated the Algoma Thunderbirds 74-39 on Sunday afternoon to claim the tournament title.
Lakehead’s third win in as many days didn’t begin easily, as Algoma dug in their heels in the first quarter and held the Thunderwolves to 14 points while putting 8 of their own on the board.
“Algoma came out tough and we struggled early on to find any rhythm,” said coach Jon Kreiner, whose team picked things up in the second quarter.
“We got some scores off our press in the second which seemed to get us going.”
Jerika Baldin finished with another impressive line, this time scoring 10 points with 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Bridget O’Reilly was the leading scorer with 13, while Gillian Lavoie helped out with 10 points in 13 minutes of play.
“Bridget was our most consistent player this weekend and Jerika had a great weekend as well. It’s been really nice coaching this group so far as we work hard are always ready to play.”
The women head to North Dakota Oct 31-Nov 1 for two games against Bemidji State in their final pre-season games.
