From the get-go, the ‘Wolves struggled to score the ball, on this occasion putting up 7 points in the first quarter. They would find their offensive flow more as the game evolved, but Guelph’s output got better in step with that of Lakehead.
Dana Van Balkom proved to be lethal from long range, hitting four three’s and totalling a game-high 18 points.
The combination of Guelph guards Barb Inrig-Pieterse and Bridget Atkinson combined for 21 points, 13 rebounds and 7 assists.
Lakehead’s leading scorers were Cassandra Soulias with 12 points while Gillian Lavoie added 11, the only starter to score in double digits. Soulias added four assists and four rebounds.
Coach Jon Kreiner:
“Full credit to Guelph. They pushed us around and we played on our heels all game. When you struggle to score as much as we did eventually the other team is going to fill the basket. On the positive, Gill Lavoie had back to back strong games and Cassandra Soulias bounced back and had a very nice game tonight.”
Lakehead hosts Ottawa and Carleton next weekend.
