‘Wolves Fall to Sharp Shooting Badgers

Despite some solid defensive stands, the women’s basketball team fell victim to some deadly three-point shooting, losing 73-64 to the Brock Badgers.

The first quarter started with Brock running out to a 13-4 lead, as the ‘Wolves struggled to find their rhythm early. Some three-pointers from Cass Soulias, Katelyn Andrea and Blair McNaughton helped to stem the tide, with Lakehead pulling within three, 22-19 after 10 minutes.

Lakehead came out with renewed purpose in the second frame, going on a 16-3 run to take a 35-23 lead. Brock’s coach was assessed a technical foul with 4:27 remaining, which lit a fire under his players, who hit four straight three’s, the first by Kayla Santilli from about six feet behind the arc.

Lakehead’s offense was limited to one layup by Katelyn Andrea through the final 5 minutes of the half. Andrea had 8 points and 10 rebounds after playing the entire first half, as she was assigned to guard Brock all-star Kate Harpur. Andrea would finish with 11 points and 13 rebounds, while Harpur also had a double-double with 14 points and 15 boards.

Lakehead locked down on D once again in the third, holding the Badgers scoreless through the first 6 and a half minutes. Once they started scoring, they came in bunches, to the tune of 15 in the remainder of the quarter, capped by a buzzer beating three to put Brock up 52-50.

The Badgers kept on rolling in the fourth, and kept the ‘Wolves at bay. Bridget O’Reilly hit a three to pull Lakehead to within 5 points, (65-60) with three minutes left but it wasn’t enough.

The women’s team will rematch against the Badgers tomorrow evening at the Meridian Centre at 5pm.
