The Lakehead men’s and women’s basketball teams are at home this weekend playing against the Brock University Badgers on both Friday and Saturday night. On Saturday night the women will be hosting their annual ‘Think Pink: Shoot for the Cure’ game, where they will be raising money and awareness towards breast cancer.
Women’s Basketball (3-6)
Coach Kreiner:
“Brock has been up and down but is a very strong team that can beat anyone. They have a very strong inside game with some good shooters and one of the best point guards in the country. Kira Cornelissen is averaging 20 points and 11 rebounds and is a force inside. Point Guard Bridget Atkinson is smart, tough to guard and Melissa Tatti is a tremendous outside shooter with range. We will need to play much more consistently this weekend at home.”
Although having lost the last 4 out of 5 games, the Brock Badgers (3-5) are a tough team that have played some strong teams this season and have a few athletes that are averaging points in the double digits including Kira Corelissen. Corelissen is second with the most points per game in the league and is third in rebounding. Melissa Tatti is averaging 10 points per game and is third in the league for steals, averaging 3.3 behind Lakehead’s Bridget O’Reilly.
“This weekend is our ‘Think Pink’ Shoot for the Cure weekend (Saturday) and we are looking forward to playing hard for all those suffering from or those who’ve lost a loved one to breast cancer.” – Coach Kreiner
The women will be wearing their pink jerseys on Saturday to raise awareness for breast cancer and donations can be made throughout the week and during the game with 100% of the proceeds being put towards breast cancer research in Northern Ontario.

Men’s Basketball (2-7)
Brock (5-3) is currently leading the Central Division and is ranked seventh in the U Sports top 10. The Badgers have won some important games this season and also have some key players who are averaging 10 plus points per game including senior Ryan Bennett. Brock has put up big points in almost every game they have played this season, averaging 73 points per game. The Badgers have a perfect record at home of 3-0 but are 2-3 on the road and will have to face stepping into the Thunderdome this Friday night.
“This weekend is another great opportunity for us to play against a top 10 team in the country twice. We will need to focus on executing the game plan and competing for 40 minutes or more.” – Coach Furtado
