The American Collegiate Hockey Association has announced their division 2 award winners this morning with Head Coach Dan Calvert of the Lakehead Women’s Club Hockey Team being named Coach of the Year.
“Dan has done a great job leading his program to success and he deserves this award. The Women’s Hockey Team has had an exceptional season and their dedication is certainly paying off. Congratulations to the coaching staff, athletes, and management for all their hard work and success and wishing them good luck as they defend their national title”, said Lakehead Athletics Director Tom Warden.
A team that puts a tremendous amount commitment and energy into their sport and community, the Thunderwolves have worked hard to build their outstanding program and be known as one of the best teams in their league.
Calvert led his team last year in a 19 game winning streak and finished off the year winning the ACHA D2 National Championship as the first ever Canadian team. This year the Wolves headed into nationals 12-3 and have their sights set on taking the national title home once again.
Azia Vass (Thunder Bay, ON) was also named to the All American Second Team and has continued to be a strong leader for the Wolves on the ice.
The Wolves opened the championship tournament on Wednesday in Ohio with a huge 17-1 win over Montclair and went on to beat Buffalo 6-4 the following day. After a final tiebreaker this afternoon between Lakehead and Boston, the Wolves will play in the semi-final tomorrow to confirm their spot in the championship game on Sunday.
