The Lakehead women’s basketball team lost this afternoon to the Saskatchewan Huskies 73-69 in a close finish in their last preseason game at the Regina Cougar Classic.
The Thunderwolves were up 16-15 after the first quarter but struggled in the second as they only scored 10 points compared to the Huskies 27. Now battling to get back in the game, the Thunderwolves trailed 42-26 at halftime.
Lakehead came out blazing in the third on defense and held the Huskies to just 6 points for the entire quarter. The Thunderwolves brought it within 1 going in the fourth quarter 48-47.
The Wolves and Huskies competed back and forth for the lead in the fourth quarter up until the last minute. Lakehead trailed by 2 with 10 seconds left and had a shot to tie it up but missed and were forced to foul.
“I am very proud of our team with how hard we played on the defensive end. We created 24 points off turnovers and Karissa did an excellent job on Dukate. Karissa has a great all-around game and Leashja was just a beast in the second half, playing hard on both ends of the floor. This was great for us as we know we can compete with the best but have a lot of things to work on for the regular season,” said Coach Kreiner after the game.
Leashja Grant had 22 points with 13 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals. Karissa Kajorinne had 16 points, shooting 4-7 from the three and Lily Gruber-Schulz put up 10 points.
Last year the Huskies were U SPORTS Silver medalists at the National Championships.
The Thunderwolves were out-rebounded 49-37 but turned the Huskies over 25 times while holding their own turnovers to just 12.
This was the last preseason game for the Thunderwolves. Their next games are October 26 and 27 for the OUA home opener against Algoma.
