With the regular season just over a week away, both the men’s and women’s basketball teams seek to tune up their game in non-conference play this weekend. The women head to Minnesota to take on the Bemidji State Beavers Saturday and Sunday, while the men’s team will host the Hibbing Community College Cardinals Friday and Saturday for a pair of exhibition scrimmages.
Lakehead hopes that the Beavers, who have good size and strength inside along with some very talented guards, will prepare them for a similarly outfitted Guelph team when league play begins Nov 6.
“The last time we played the Beavers the games were up-tempo and exciting but we struggled with our interior defence. We will need to be on point in that department which will be a tough challenge with their skilled shooters. We are battling through some injuries but we should have the majority of our squad available.”
The men’s team is coming off a 2-1 weekend in St Catharines, and will have a chance to get some game experience for their expanded roster in these final non-conference contests of the pre-season.
Lakehead post Bacarius Dinkins is looking forward to the weekend, having played against Hibbing during his junior college career in Minnesota prior to becoming a Thunderwolf.
“This weekend will be a great chance for all of our players to get some playing time and get things primed for the regular season that’s around the corner.”
