CURLING HEADS TO OUA CHAMPIONSHIPS

| Curling, News

Lakehead’s Curling Team is heading to Guelph, ON to compete in the 2020 OUA Curling Championships hosted by the Guelph Gryphons.

The women’s team, consisting of skip Tiana Gaudry, Erin Tomalty at Third, Aynsley Williams at Second, and Emily Rea/Alyssa Rice at lead, is heading to the championships in hopes of reaching the podium this year after a tough loss in the bronze medal match last year to the Brock Badgers.

Fourth year Tomalty says “It’s been a challenging year for me and the team as my school placement in Kenora has prevented us from working together but we’ve all put our best foot forward and the young front end has really done an excellent job in adjusting to the practice demands. I feel very comfortable with Tiana holding the broom as we have played in a number of competitions in previous years. We are a very regional team representing four towns in NWO and Caledon in the south. This will be a wonderful challenge for us and a great learning experience especially for the teammates who will have four more years of eligibility.”

Our men’s team consists of Evan Chisamore-Johnson at skip, Felix Lasalle at third, Adam Walker at second, and Josh Fiegehan at lead. After a tough 13th place finish in the championships, this young team is looking to improve upon their performance from last year.

“I’m a little nervous to be skipping at my first provincial championship but I’ve got very good support from all my teammates, especially Adam, who holds the broom for my shots. I’m sure the anxiety will dissipate once the championships start. My sister is also competing this year [with U of T], so I will be watching and comparing our progress.” says fourth year Chisamore-Johnston, of Newmarket ON.

Pool play begins this Thursday, February 13th. The Women’s team is competing in Pool A, with the first match scheduled for 1:00 pm on Thurs Feb 13 against the Algoma Thunderbirds. The Men’s team is competing in Pool C, with the first match scheduled for 8:30 am on Thurs Feb 13 against the Ryerson Rams.
