The women’s basketball team had their chances, but could not capitalize down the stretch, losing 79-67 to the Bemidji State Beavers on Saturday evening.
It was a tightly-contested affair for the first half, Lakehead trailing 19-16 after the first quarter before taking the lead into the locker room, 39-36.
The ‘Wolves battled back; with the game tied at 52, Bridget O’Reilly hit a three off a drive and kick from Amanda Miller to re-take the lead, 55-52 with 10 minutes to play.
“I was happy with Katelyn Andrea’s return tonight, and Zen was great on the boards,” said coach Jon Kreiner, referring to his veteran posts. Katelyn Zen grabbed 11 rebounds. Katelyn Andrea scored 15 points with 7 rebounds.
A fourth quarter run by the Beavers put them up 72-62 with 3:40 remaining in the game. Some desperation three’s that missed followed by ill-advised fouls by the Thunderwolves put Bemidji in the driver’s seat. The Beavers kept their momentum going and closed out the game. After leading 62-61, the ‘Wolves found themselves trailing 78-62.
“I’m pleased with our play for three quarters today. We controlled the first 30 minutes and mixed our defensive and offensive looks. Things unravelled with under six minutes to go and we struggled with our decision making, transition and interior defense. Plus we relied too much on the three. All in all a good prep game but I’d like to see a better effort for 40 minutes tomorrow.”
