‘Wolves Down Voyageurs, 81-73

Hugh Mullally | Basketball (W)

The women’s basketball team survived an all-out three-point assault by the Laurentian Voyageurs on Friday night, winning 81-73.

Of their 68 shots, the visiting Voyageurs shot an incredible 49 from behind the three-point line, hitting 15 of them.

Lakehead would counter with solid rebounding, holding a 41-31 advantage on the game, although coming down the stretch the Voyageurs were making a case to close in on the ‘Wolves, as Adrienne Moreau and Danielle Harris hit some desperation three’s late in the game.

Gillian Lavoie’s game was stepped up yet again, this time scoring 20 points with 11 rebounds on 10-of-13 shooting to lead the Thunderwolves.

Jerika Baldin put together another solid game, this time with 9 assists and 9 points with 1 turnover.

Back up point guard Rachel Webber (photo left) was anything and everything her team needed her to be, as she scored 8 points with 5 assists, but made her biggest impact on defense. With the Voyageurs threatening late, Webber’s tenacious defense on Danielle Harris in the backcourt got the wily Laurentian vet off balance. Harris barrelled into Webber in an attempt to draw a foul, but Webber’s quick footwork kept her squared up to Harris, who was called for the offensive foul, thus extinguishing any hope of a Voyageurs comeback.

Coach Jon Kreiner:

“This was a big win for us as we pull back to .500. Laurentian beat us last year in a tough defensive battle but tonight the net was big and both teams filled it up. The key for us was getting the ball inside. Gill Lavoie was big for us tonight and Jerika continues to do a great job distributing the ball. We now need to get ready for a very tough weekend at Brock for two divisional games.”

The women’s team travels to St Catharines next weekend to take on the Brock Badgers.
