Gee-Gees Top ‘Wolves, 65-50

Hugh Mullally | Basketball (W)

The women’s basketball team was defeated 65-50 at the hands of the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Friday evening.

As usual, Lakehead’s defense was solid, but their offensive flow seemed to be lacking. The ‘Wolves dug in their heels in the first quarter, but still trailed 16-13 after 10 minutes.

The Gee-Gees expanded their lead to 13 at halftime, ahead 35-22.

Blair McNaughton had her best game of the young season, hitting four 3’s and finishing with 18 points. Bridget O’Reilly was also a potent force from the outside, hitting on 3 of her 7 attempts.

Lakehead would muster just 10 other field goals, however, and go 9-for-18 from the free throw line.

Gillian Lavoie pulled down 8 rebounds but failed to score. It seemed at every turn Ottawa players were hitting 3’s, their team going 8-for-15 from the outside, and 23-for-52 overall.

Catherine Traer was the Gee-Gee’s leader with 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting in 34 minutes.

“Basketball is a game of decisions,” said coach Jon Kreiner. “Tonight we made too many poor decisions. I think our defense was pretty good at times considering how much time we spent playing transition D. We just need to manage tough situations better and not allow the long runs.  Blair McNaughton really stepped up for us tonight and it was nice getting Rachel back.”

Local point guard Cassandra Soulias went down in the first half when she rolled her ankle, but returned to the lineup and is expected to play tomorrow against the Ravens at 6pm.
