The women’s basketball team were unable to repeat their sharp shooting from a night prior on Saturday evening, this time losing 69-51 to the Queen’s Gaels.
The first quarter started slow for both teams out of the gate. Maggie Murphy finally hit a three to get the ‘Wolves going midway through, but they trailed 15-11 after 10 minutes.
The rebounding woes continued in the second half, and the ‘Wolves were not going to shoot themselves out of trouble on this occasion. Through three quarters Lakehead was just 1-of-13 from behind the arc. Katelyn Andrea would hit a three early in the fourth but as a team the ‘Wolves struggled, hitting just 3 of their 21 long range attempts (14%) and 21 of 73 overall (29%) from the field.
Katelyn Andrea scored a game-high 17 points and Jerika Baldin added 13 points and 8 assists.
The Gaels’ starters out-rebounded Lakehead’s 44-22, and as a team held a 61-34 advantage on the glass.
“I’m proud of our team. Overall we did a great job keeping Queen’s off-balance all game but in the end they outmatched us with their size and dominated the boards. We couldn’t get much scoring in the paint so we had to rely on outside shooting. We had some really good looks but they didn’t fall tonight.”
Lakehead’s record moves to 5-8 with 6 games remaining in the regular season.
