Rams Hold on for Win Over ‘Wolves

Hugh Mullally | Basketball (W)

Despite a late flurry of offense, the women’s basketball team were dispatched, 70-58 by the Ryerson Rams on Friday.

B_OReilly_v_Rye1Lakehead did a good job containing Ryerson’s all-star, Keneca Pingue-Giles early on, but the Rams’ other starters were there to step up and score in bunches, as the Rams raced out to a 19-11 lead after the first quarter.

The ‘Wolves were within nine, trailing 35-26 at halftime, as they succeeded in slowing down the pace of the game, but couldn’t get much going on offense outside of Katelyn Andrea, who had 12 points in the first half but was completely shut down in the final 20 minutes to finish with her dozen points and 6 rebounds.

Bridget O’Reilly stepped up for the ‘Wolves in the second half, hitting two from behind the arc in the fourth quarter. The late surge from the ‘Wolves brought them to within one point of the Rams, who had begun to coast with their starters on the bench.

Giles was promptly subbed back in to the game for the Rams and settled her team down, and put out the fire that Lakehead started by the hand of Cassandra Soulias, who hit a three and a step back jumper during the late run. Soulias finished with 10 points and 3 assists.

O’Reilly led all ‘Wolves with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Pingue-Giles finished with 16 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals. Sofia Paska had 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Rams, while Silvana Jez led all scorers with 17 points.

The Thunderwolves take on the Toronto Varsity Blues tomorrow at 6pm.
