Cassandra Soulias had her best game as a Thunderwolf, scoring eight of her 17 points in the fourth quarter to lead Lakehead past the York Lions, 81-73.
The long ball was the difference for the ‘Wolves on Friday, as they made it rain, hitting 12 of their 28 attempts from behind the arc.
The three ball continued to fuel the ‘Wolves offense through the second quarter, with Bridget O’Reilly, Blair McNaughton and Katelyn Andrea hitting consecutive shots from behind the arc. Cassandra Soulias would hit from the land beyond later on, giving Lakehead five three’s in the quarter.
The Thunderwolves expanded their lead to 55-36 in the latter part of the third quarter, only to have the Lions push back and bring the game within 7 points early in the fourth quarter. Cass Soulias hit timely three’s and a bank shot in the lane to keep the ‘Wolves lead intact.
Shauney Fischer scored 12 to lead the Lions.
“We shot the ball well and thankfully built a big enough lead before York came storming back. Bridget got us started and we played some good first half defence creating some good transition O. Maggie and Blair provided some timely shooting off the bench (5-6 from 3) but we struggled to get stops late in the fourth and fouled too much. Tomorrow we’ll need to do a better job defending without fouling.”
