Lakehead Basketball is on the road again this weekend, this time to Kitchener-Waterloo to take on the Waterloo Warriors and the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks, Friday and Saturday.
The Warriors (3-12) are on their best run of the season, winners in three of their past six games. They are led by Kristen Osbourne with 15 pts/game. As for the Golden Hawks (7-8), they’ve attempted over 350 three-pointers this season, hitting 30% of them. The Hawks are also the OUA leaders in taking care of the basketball, with the fewest turnovers committed.
“Both teams we face this weekend are similar, they both like to attack off the dribble and shoot the three. Waterloo’s gotten a lot better in terms their leaders stepping up. Laurier’s got some great shooters as well, they just passed us for most made three’s in the OUA, so we’ll need to defend the perimeter aggressively.”
Lakehead Men (7-6)
“Anyone can win in this league on any night, your record means nothing,” emphasized Furtado.
The Laurier Golden Hawks (6-9) are a ‘shoot-first, run offense later’ type of team, the OUA leaders in field goal attempts with 75/game. They also get to the free throw line with great frequency (22/game), and have committed a league-low 12.3 turnovers per game, which will add urgency to Lakehead’s effort to rebound and defend without fouling.
“It’s a great opportunity for our guys this week to get in the gym, work on some of our weaknesses and prepare for some games on the road again. It’s amazing how quickly the year has come and gone. We have six regular season games left and each one of them is important.”
