Thunder Bay, ON – Lakehead University’s women’s basketball coach Hugo Boisvert—who took over the role at an important time and helped pave a positive way forward for the team—has decided to step down for personal reasons and accept a professional opportunity that will move him closer to his home and family.
Boisvert joined Lakehead’s Thunderwolves during a pivotal time for the program, when renewed alignment with the university’s values and a fresh approach to team culture were essential. Since he arrived in 2023 , Boisvert has provided strong and steady leadership, helping to build trust and guiding the team through this transition period. Boisvert worked collaboratively to strengthen the program’s foundation to ensure a safe and united program with renewed energy and increased focus on student-athlete development and support.
“On behalf of Lakehead’s Athletics program, we wish to thank Hugo for his dedication, energy, and sincere care that he brought to the role,” said Tom Warden, Director of Athletics. “Because of his leadership, he leaves the program in a stronger place, and we wish him all the best in the next chapter of his journey.”
Reflecting on his time at Lakehead, Boisvert shared, “This was a very difficult decision for me. I have loved my time at Lakehead—the people, the community, and most of all, the student-athletes I had the privilege of coaching. An opportunity came up that felt like the right fit. The chance to be closer to family and friends played a big role in my decision—it’s something I just couldn’t pass up. However, I leave with great memories and deep appreciation. I’m extremely grateful to the department for giving me this opportunity. A heartfelt thank you to my incredible coaching staff—their impact on this program and community cannot be overstated. I also want to thank my student-athletes for their dedication and trust.”
Coaching Search Underway
Lakehead Athletics will begin an immediate and comprehensive search for the next head coach of the women’s basketball program. This process will involve working closely with the university’s Human Resources department and will be informed by consultative feedback from student-athletes, alumni, and key stakeholders to ensure inclusive perspectives guide the decision for this important role.
The search will reflect the values of Lakehead Athletics—excellence, well-being, integrity, and accountability. Women’s basketball student-athletes will be actively involved in the selection process, helping to identify a coach who can continue to elevate the program and build on its future success.
“We’re committed to learning from the past and ensuring we move forward with clarity and intention,” added Warden. “This is an exciting opportunity to build on the positive momentum Hugo helped establish, and to continue fostering a program rooted in respect, unity, and excellence.”
Lakehead University remains deeply committed to the continued success and well-being of its student-athletes. The university is grateful for the leadership transition facilitated by Coach Boisvert and looks forward to welcoming a new leader who will uphold and advance the university’s culture of excellence and care.
