Claire Wiersema of Kingston, Ontario has committed to the Thunderwolves Women’s Basketball Team for next years season.
A 5’11” Small Forward, Wiersema was the captain of the 2017 OFSAA Champions, the Frontenac Falcons. Claire will be studying Concurrent Education in Math at Lakehead and is entering with a 95% average.
Head coach Jon Kreiner on his newest addition; “We have an all-around tremendous student-athlete in Claire Wiersema. She knows how to win and is a great leader who captained her high school team to a provincial championship. Claire has great length and is a very good defender. She can hit the three, slashes well and can finish around the hoop. Claire will play a vital role for our team as a very intelligent, defending player who can score in multiple ways”.
Claire on her decision; “I chose Lakehead because I believe it will provide me with a great post-secondary education while allowing me to continue to develop my skills on the court. I am looking forward to joining an outstanding basketball program full of talented players and passionate coaches. The atmosphere at Lakehead is incredible and I cannot wait to begin my journey there as a Thunderwolf!”
Claire’s coach, Karlyn Pixley has this to say about Claire; “I am thrilled for Claire to be a part of the Lakehead basketball family! I have had the privilege of coaching Claire for 3 years, and have seen her grow as a player into one of the captains of the reigning OFSAA champions. She is an outstanding defensive and offensive player. Claire will be a perfect fit for the program and has the skill set to contribute immediately to the team. I wish Claire all the best in her adventures both athletically and academically at Lakehead.”
