Lakehead Basketball will host the Nipissing Lakers and the Laurentian Voyageurs this weekend. These are the final varsity basketball games in the Thunderdome prior to the December break for exams.
Lakehead Women (1-3)
Fourth year Claire Abbott leads the Lakers into the Thunderdome on Friday. She’s averaged nearly 17 points per game and 37% from behind the arc.
“Nipissing just won their first CIS game vs York last weekend and have been playing tough all year. They mix it up on defense to try to get you out of rhythm and Claire Abbott has been lights out so far,” commented coach Jon Kreiner.
“Laurentian plays tough defense and are always an outside threat. Danielle Harris has been a tough guard for us to contain so we’ll need to be ready to defend without fouling.”
Nipissing (0-4) may be winless, but competitively are far from a walk in the park. Lakehead’s lop-sided 92-49 win last season in North Bay came largely by virtue of shooters that have since departed the Thunderwolves.
In last year’s 62-52 win over the Voyageurs in Sudbury, Bacarius Dinkins had 20 points and 12 rebounds. Laurentian brings a record of 0-4 this weekend but has historically been a gritty, hard working team under coach Shawn Swords, with the last two of those losses coming by a combined 4 points, one in overtime.
