The OUA announced the men’s and women’s basketball schedule for the upcoming 2016-17 season today, along with a few minor changes to the playoff seeding formula.
Lakehead will play a 19-game season, grouped with their Central division rivals, McMaster, Guelph and Brock. Lakehead opens the regular season at home against the Algoma Thunderbirds on November 5 before a critical double-header versus McMaster the following weekend in Hamilton.
Perhaps more importantly, the top 12 teams (ranked by RPI, regardless of division), will qualify for the playoffs. It is hoped this will eliminate the late-season drama and unpredictability that had previously gotten the better of numerous teams whose playoffs fates were determined in the final game of the season. The four top ranked teams will be awarded first-round byes.
The OUA will be announcing the 16-17 volleyball schedule tomorrow.
