The Lakehead men’s and women’s basketball teams are off to Guelph this weekend to face the Gryphons on both Friday and Saturday night. Both teams captured at least 1 win this past weekend, and will be looking to carry their momentum into these important games.
Women’s Basketball (6-9)
The Gryphons (4-12) have recently been playing well, scoring a season high of 77 points this past weekend. Third year guard Samantha Renshaw averaged 14 points on the weekend alongside 3 other teammates who are all average double digit points this season.
Coach Kreiner:
“We head to Guelph for 2 huge games for our women’s basketball program. Guelph plays hard, rebounds the ball well, mix it up defensively while slowing you down and have a number of players that can score. They will be a tough match up for us with their length and athleticism and ability to put it on the floor to score. We will be preparing hard all week as we look to continue to improve and find ways to win. We are also looking forward to playing in Guelph brand new basketball facility, should be a great weekend of basketball.”
Men’s Basketball (4-11)
Guelph (4-12) is currently on a 3 game losing streak and has a 2-4 home record. The Gryphons average 72 points per game but only 33 rebounds compared to the Thunderwolves 40 rebounds per game, with Bacarius Dinkins sitting in the top 5, averaging 9.
Ahmed Haroon leads the Gryphons with 11 points, 6 rebounds per game.
The Gryphons are also first in the league for most free throws made per game and free throws attempted per game.
“This weekend will be a huge test for our team. We know whats at stake and so does Guelph. We need to prepare like we do and be ready for a physical, hard nosed game, in what looks like a great new athletic facility.” – Coach Furtado
As the regular season is starting to come to an end and playoffs are drawing near, both men’s and women’s teams are trying to solidify their position in playoffs and understand the importance of each game for the next two weekends.
