Now that the regular season is over, the Lakehead men’s and women’s basketball teams have both moved on to the OUA opening playoff round. The women’s team will be facing the Brock Badgers at the Bob Davis Gymnasium in St. Catharines. The men’s team is off to Toronto to take on the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. Both games will take place on Wednesday, February 22 at 7:00pm.
Women’s Basketball (8-11)
Coach Kreiner:
“We are very excited to be a part of the 2017 OUA Playoffs. We have worked hard and have overcome a lot of adversity to get to this point. Our team is battle tested and ready to make a strong push. Brock is a very talented team with a number of potential all-star calibre players on their roster. They have also been hit by the injury bug but have one of the top point guards in the OUA in Bridget Atkinson as well as one of the top shooting guards in Melissa Tatti. Kira Cornelissen is one of the best posts in the OUA and even though she’s been out with an injury we must prepare for her as she can take over a game.”
The Thunderwolves split against Brock (8-11) earlier this year in a two game home double header. Lakehead lost the first night 92-84 and walked away the second night with a 71-47 win.
The Badgers are 5-4 at home this season and have proven the ability to stand up to any team in the league. Kira Cornelissen scored a totally of 45 points in the two games against the ‘Wolves and leads the league with the highest average of 20 points per game.
The winner of this game will move on to play Queen’s on Saturday February 25 in the OUA Quarter Finals.

Men’s Basketball (6-13)
The Thunderwolves men’s team (#12) will take on Toronto (#5) who went 11-8 in the regular season. The Varsity Blues average 74 points per game and have multiple athletes that have the ability to score big numbers.
The Thunderwolves and Varsity blues met earlier this year in one game in Toronto that left the Thunderwolves losing 74-64 with Bacarius Dinkins scoring 18 points.
Toronto’s Devin Johnson had 28 points, 10 rebounds against the Thunderwolves and averages 20 points per game with an 80% free throw percentage.
“We are playing a very good Toronto team that has everything; scorers, shooters and toughness inside. We will need a total team effort for 40 minutes or more if we want our season to continue” – Coach Furtado
The winner of this opening round will take on Brock on Saturday, February 25th in the OUA Quarter Finals.
