Lakehead’s women’s basketball team beat the Waterloo Warriors on Friday evening by a score of 69-45. Lakehead’s record improves to 15-4. Waterloo drops to 5-14 with their second straight loss.
“We had a good start but Waterloo did a great job battling back and keeping it close,” Thunderwolves head coach Jon Kreiner. Lakehead jumped out to a 24-14 lead in the first quarter, and was up 35-21 going into the break. The Thunderwolves won both periods of the second half as well, expanding the lead by an additional 10 points.
“We weren’t at our best all game,” Kreiner said, “but we played smart D and scored when we needed to.”
The Thunderwolves forced Waterloo into 26 turnovers, with Lakehead grabbing 20 steals. Leashja Grant led the Thunderwolves with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Karissa Kajorinne added 14 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists, and Sofia Lluch had 13 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists.
The two teams will tip off the rematch tomorrow at 12 noon in Waterloo’s Physical Activities Complex.
“We need to be more disciplined on both ends of the floor,” Kreiner said, “to play with more focused energy and be more consistent for 40 minutes tomorrow.”
