Lakehead’s women’s basketball team ended their Ottawa trip with a bang, defeating the Carleton Ravens by a score of 56-52 on Saturday night. The win moves the Thunderwolves to 5-1, and also marks the end of Carleton’s 53-game home win streak. The Ravens came into the weekend ranked fourth in USPORTS top ten teams in Canada.
“This was a huge win for our program and for our team after a tough second half against Ottawa,” Thunderwolves head coach Jon Kreiner said. “It’s also huge for our team from a learning perspective regarding what it takes to win against the best teams in the country.”
Lakehead won every quarter except for the third, and took a 35-29 lead into the half. Leashja Grant led both teams in scoring and rebounding, dropping 30 points and grabbing 24 boards.
“Leashja was obviously amazing tonight but defensively Nikki had some key steals down the stretch and as a team we executed our defensive game plan and made good adjustments,” Kreiner said. Nikki Ylagan shot only 2-10 from the floor, including 1-9 from deep, but came away with 4 steals to go with her 7 points.
“We didn’t shoot the ball well (0-9 from 3 second half), missed a bunch of free throws and layups, but our defense gave us a chance to win,” Kreiner said.
Lakehead next faces Queens and York home at the Thunderdome on November 23rd and 24th, respectively.
