Women’s basketball team defeats Warriors, completes another weekend sweep

| Basketball (W), News

Lakehead’s women’s basketball team defeated the Waterloo Warriors by a score of 64-46 early Saturday afternoon, completing another perfect weekend for the women’s squad. Lakehead is now 16-4 and second in the OUA West.

“The start today was not the way we wanted it to go,” Thunderwolves head coach Jon Kreiner said, “Waterloo made it really hard on us and we didn’t bring the energy needed to play at a high level.”

The Warriors came out of the gate ready to battle, looking to avenge their Friday-night loss to Lakehead. The two squads fought back and forth in the early portion of the game, with the Thunderwolves managing only a two-point lead at half. In the third period, however, Lakehead stepped up and expanded their lead by 15 points, 54-37. Waterloo failed to respond in the final frame, and the Thunderwolves either tied or won the scoring margin of all four quarters.

“We turned things around in the third with some dominant play by Leashja, while Tiffany and Tianna provided great leadership,” Kreiner said.

Leashja Grant finished with 16 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks. Tiffany Reynolds and Tianna Warwick-Dawkins combined for 14 points, 12 rebounds, and 5 steals, in addition to 55 total minutes played of solid hustle and defense. Guard Nikki Ylagan contributed 11 points and 4 steals for the Thunderwolves.

Lakehead stifled the Warriors attempts to establish consistent offense throughout the game, limiting Waterloo to only one double-digit scorer. The Thunderwolves also picked up 19 steals on the way to forcing the Warriors into 25 turnovers. Waterloo drops to 5-15.

Thunderwolves basketball is again on the road next weekend as they travel to Waterloo to face the Golden Hawks of Wilfrid Laurier University. Lakehead returns to the Thunderdome the following weekend for the last regular season action of the year.
