Women’s basketball team takes down national #2 in penultimate game of 2018

The Lakehead women’s basketball team beat the #2 ranked team in the country on Friday night, taking down the Ryerson Rams by a score of 72-63. Lakehead improves to 8-1.

“This was a huge win for our program, and I am extremely happy with how we battled for all 40 minutes,” Thunderwolves head coach Jon Kreiner said. Lakehead’s four-game win streak has now seen them defeat two top-ten teams, nationally.

“We just played with so much heart today against a very very good team,” Kreiner said. Lakehead held Ryerson to less than half their average rebounds per game and forced the Rams into 19 turnovers.

Thunderwolves senior guard Karissa Kajorinne was again a steadying force for the home team, dropping a game-leading 26 points and picking up 6 rebounds. Lakehead defended as a team, holding Ryerson to 35.5% shooting in the game.

“Lily [Gruber-Schulz] was so tough on defense and Karissa was dynamite in the second half. Our team is playing with so much confidence and it’s fun to watch and coach,” Kreiner said. Gruber-Schulz and Kajorinne were the only two Thunderwolves to play more than 30 minutes. “Our ladies are focused in practice and in turn are on point in our game planning and game execution.”

Lakehead faces the University of Toronto Blues tomorrow night at the Thunderdome in the final game before the semester break. The game begins at 6pm, with the men’s game following.
