Women’s basketball team wins again, takes five-game win streak into the break

| Basketball (W), News

The Lakehead women’s basketball team defeated the Toronto Varsity Blues by a score of 84-71 on Saturday night. The Thunderwolves move to 9-1. The women will now take a five-game win streak into the break, including two wins over top-ten nationally ranked teams.

“It’s been a great first half of the season,” Thunderwolves head coach Jon Kreiner said.

Lakehead began slowly on Saturday night, ending the first quarter with a one-point deficit. The Thunderwolves managed to pull ahead 38-30 going into the half but struggled to put the game away.

“Our energy level wasn’t great but we found enough ways to score the ball, and Nikki’s fourth-quarter threes were big,” Kreiner said.

Thunderwolves forward Leashja Grant finished with a game-leading 30 points and 14 rebounds. Lily Gruber-Schulz finished with a double-double of her own, picking up 10 points, 10 boards, a block, and a steal. Senior guard Karissa Kajorinne again was again solid, scoring 13 points and picking up 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Twelve different Lakehead players saw the court, with nine different players contributing points.

Toronto was paced Keyira Parkes’ 19 points, while three others contributed 12 points apiece.

The Thunderwolves women’s basketball team now takes their win streak and national ranking into the semester break, and will next see action on January 11th and 12th against the Windsor Lancers.

“We are in need of a break, as most teams are,” Kreiner said. “Time to focus on our studies.”
