‘Wolves vs. Mustangs in Weekend Doubleheader

| Volleyball (W)

The women’s volleyball team (5-7) continues their home stand this weekend against the Western Mustangs (8-2), Friday and Saturday night in the Thunderdome at 7pm.

Saturday features the team’s annual Think Pink: Spike for the Cure benefit game, which raises money to fight cancer in Northern Ontario.

“Friday’s game will be special, I know the ladies love to show their support with their pink uniforms,” mentioned coach Chris Green.

As to the task on the court, Green begins, “Western brings a wealth of talent in their lineup. They boast one of the best middles in Canada in #14 Kelsey Veltman. She’s plays middle but honestly can play any position, and is a dominant attacker, blocker and server.”

The sophomore Mustang Veltman has averaged 4 points/set, along with being the OUA’s second best blocker (1.3/set) and has the second highest attacker efficiency rating (.423).

Western also has potent weapons in right side Aja Gyimah and setter Katherine Tsiofas.

“Western will test all you have as an offence and they will play an attacking defence with tough serving to set up their block,” continues coach Green.

“We need to find a way to control the passing lanes, and to have attackers show up in bunches on each night. Traditionally this season each game is a highlight for a single attacker and we must find depth and consistency. It’s a great test, and a great opportunity to match up against one of the top teams in OUA.”

Lakehead will hope to counter with Kailan Robinson on the left side, who factored heavily against the Mustangs in a 3-2 win last season. Both Robinson and Casey struggled in their first games since the break last weekend, but have proven themselves capable of leading the ‘Wolves under pressure in the past.
