The Lakehead men’s basketball team dropped its weekend-opening match to the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Friday night, losing 89-53.

“It was a tough night for us,” Thunderwolves head coach Ryan Thomson said. “I thought we battled back to start the second half, and had it down to twelve, but then a few mistakes in a row led to open threes for a disciplined and unselfish Ottawa team.”

Lakehead lost the opening frame 26-11, fought back early in the second, but still took a 44-27 deficit into the half.

“When we made a mistake, they punished us, which is what good teams do,” Thomson said.

The Thunderwolves finished with 12 team turnovers and no players reaching double-digit points. Ottawa’s offense featured three double-digit scorers, including Gage Sabean’s 27.

The loss drops Lakehead to 2-3 on the season, and they currently sit fifth of nine in the OUA West division. The Thunderwolves remain in Ottawa, and will face the Carleton Ravens tomorrow night at the Raven’s Nest.

“Tomorrow we have a chance against the best team in the country to show some heart and determination,” Thomson said.
