Thunderwolves Stomp Axemen, 89-47

Hugh Mullally | Basketball (M)

The men’s basketball team was firing on all pistons Tuesday evening versus the Acadia Axemen, romping to a 89-47 win, and the Wesmen Classic championship game.

It didn’t take long for Lakehead to assert its 3-point game, with Brandon Persad and Kache Kopec striking early and often. They would help the T-Wolves out to an early 30-13 lead after the first quarter.

One night after combining for nine 3’s on 22 attempts (41%), Lakehead’s very own ‘Cash Brothers’ were money from outside, hitting ten 3’s on 18 attempts (56%). The duo combined for 34 points.

After both teams locked down defensively for the first 5 minutes of the second quarter, Lakehead poured it on, up 46-24 at the break.

The ‘Wolves breathed easy for the remainder, letting the game come to them and knocking down open shots, finishing 43% from the floor.

Nick Burke had a complete outing, scoring 10 points with 7 rebounds and 6 assists. Bacarius Dinkins was 7-of-10 from the field for 16 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocked shots.

Kyle Arsenault led Acadia with 10 points and 7 rebounds. The Axemen struggled from the field, shooting 23% on the game.

Coach Manny Furtado:

“I’m proud of the way our guys executed the game plan and competed tonight. We’re going to need the same execution tomorrow against a very tough and physical Manitoba team.”

Lakehead takes on the Manitoba Bison in the Wesmen Classic title game tomorrow at 9:00pm (Eastern Time).
