Dinkins Leads ‘Wolves Over ‘Birds

Bacarius Dinkins had a monstrous 27-point, 17-rebound game, leading the Thunderwolves to a 73-65 win over the Algoma Thunderbirds.

The Wolves jumped out to a 19-15 lead after the first quarter, and extended it to 23-15 early in the second quarter. The Thunderbirds did find their rhythm on offense, closing the lead to a single point, with Lakehead in front 33-32 at the break.

Bacarius DinkinsBacarius Dinkins simply could not be matched in the paint, as he scored 15 points with 14 rebounds through three quarter. Then he took further control of the game in the final stanza, scoring 12 more points to complete an exceptional game. He could have had broke the 30 point mark, as he missed on six of his 17 free throw attempts.

Alex Robichaud provided his usual spark on defense, clocking 39 minutes, and dropped in a trifecta of three-pointers along with four free throws for 13 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists.

Henry Tan scored 13 points with 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Australian import Jack Bull was a factor in getting extra possessions for the ‘Wolves, as he grabbed 7 offensive rebounds, and 8 in total before fouling out.

For the Thunderbirds, Nathan Riley scored 17 and Andre Barber had 15 points.

Lakehead out-rebounded Algoma 47-27, and limited them to 5-of-30 shooting from the outside, while hitting 7 of their 17 three-point attempts.
“Our guys competed tonight,” said coach Manny Furtado. “”I’m proud of the way they handled themselves. No games for three weeks plus a long drive, but they didn’t use it as an excuse and took care of business.”

Lakehead hosts the McMaster Marauders next weekend in an OUA Central Division doubleheader, Friday-Saturday.
