Wolves Beaten by Gaels, 80-72

Hugh Mullally | Basketball (M)

The men’s basketball team had no answer for Queen’s Gael Sukhpreet Singh, who scored 36 points in handing the ‘Wolves an 80-72 loss on Saturday.

Taner_Parrington 15-16Just as the scouting reported read, Singh was the man to stop on Queen’s, as he led the home side with 22 first half points, the ‘Wolves trailing 37-34 at the break.

Lakehead did a good job slowing Singh down in the third quarter, limiting him to zero points, but they could only slow him down for so long.

Singh dropped 14 more in the final stanza to push the Gaels past the ‘Wolves, who got a valiant effort from Bacarius Dinkins, who scored 10 points in the final quarter to finish with 25 points and 10 rebounds.

Henry Tan scored 19, but went a troubling 5-of-10 from the free throw line. His teammates could do no better at the line, as the ‘Wolves went 12-of-22 as a team, with deflating misses down the stretch.

Singh finished with 36 points and 9 rebounds to lead to Gaels, followed by Ryall Stroud with 13 points.

Taner Parrington (photo above) had 9 points and 7 rebounds in 24 minutes off the bench for Lakehead.

Coach Manny Furtado:

“We had too many mental mistakes defensively and Queen’s capitalized with some timely shots. Our guys fought hard the whole weekend. We just need to start shooting the ball a little better from the free throw line we can close out games like this one better and have a better chance down the stretch.”

Lakehead’s records stands at 7-6 with 6 games remaining in the regular season.
