Bigs Power ‘Wolves Past Warriors

Hugh Mullally | Basketball (M)

Lakehead post players Bacarius Dinkins and Taner Parrington were efficient on Friday, combining for 30 points on 20 shots, shooting 70% from the field, to carry the Thunderwolves past the Waterloo Warriors, 84-64.

Darnell Curtin 15-16It would take some doing in the second half for Lakehead to end up with such a lop-sided victory, as they were up 18-17 after 10 minutes, and trailed 43-40 at halftime.

Ben Davis was the fuel to the Warriors fire in the first half, hitting all five of his three-pointers and scoring 21 points.

The ‘Wolves halftime deficit stood despite shooting over 55% from the field. Their early weakness, despite Davis’ red-hot hand, was on the glass, with Waterloo out-rebounding Lakehead 23-13 in the first half.

Lakehead came out in the second half with renewed energy, and clamped down on Davis, limiting him to zero points in the third quarter and only four more in the fourth.

As a team, Lakehead out-scored Waterloo 44-21 in the final 20 minutes, thanks in no small part to evening the rebounding numbers to 37 a side by the final buzzer.

Henry Tan also provided his usual energy off the bounce, scoring a team-high 17 points to go with an impressive 9 rebounds.

Rookie Darnell Curtin (photo above) had his most productive game to date, scoring 10 points on 4-of-4 from the field. Alex Robichaud scored 13 points with 7 rebounds.

Ben Davis had a game-high 25 points with 8 rebounds for the Warriors.

Coach Manny Furtado:

“We’ll gladly take the win tonight. Sooner or later our guys better realize that a lack of defensive execution and not improving our perimeter shooting is going to hurt us.”

The men’s team remains in Kitchener-Waterloo to play the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks tomorrow at 8pm.
