Tree Misses Bronze by a Nose at OUA’s

Hugh Mullally | Track & Field

Lakehead’s track team ran well at the OUA indoor track championships over the weekend.

Kevin Tree 14-15Kevin Tree was the closest Thunderwolf to reaching the podium on the weekend, competing in the men’s 3000m on Friday evening. After leading for most of the race Tree was overtaken on the final lap and looked to stretch it out for the bronze medal, but was beaten by a nose (.16 of a second) and forced to settle for 4th place with a time of 8:21.35. Tyler White ran a new personal best (PB) in the 3000m with a time of 8:46.98, placing 13th.

In the women’s 3000m, Kayla Gallo and Marla Keyes placed 15th and 16th, respectively, thus improving on their ranking coming into the race (19 and 21).

Mason Quarrell and Tyler White both ran well in the 1500m on Saturday, Quarrell making an impressive effort, as he came into the race ranked 16th and placed 8th overall with a time of 3:58.31, placing 2nd in his section. White won his section and placed 17th overall in a time of 4:03.36.

In the women’s 1500m, Kayla Gallo ran a new PB with a time of 4:57.42, placing 20th while Marla Keyes was next in 21st place in a time of 5:07.38.

Coach Kip Sigsworth:

“Very good weekend, the athletes ran tough and finished better than their rankings coming in. Tree went for it in the 3km and just came up short of a medal. Mason got better each meet this season and was top 8 today after coming in ranked 16th. Tyler White had a break out season and set himself up well for a big final year next season.”
