The Lakehead women’s volleyball team (3-12) fell short this afternoon, 3-0 (25-18, 26-24, 25-17), to the Guelph Gryphons (5-9) at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre.

The Thunderwolves had a good start to the first set pushing an 8-2 lead. The Gryphons quickly adjusted with a 14-3 run and surpassed the Wolves to win the first set 25-18.

Lakehead put up a fight in the second set as the two teams went back and forth. Both teams were tied at 24 until Guelph collected the last two points with a huge block and an error by Lakehead to give the win to the Gryphons.

Guelph led 11-10 in the third and continued to go on a 6-1 run. The Gryphons finished off the day with a kill to take the 3-0 win.

Coach Chris Green:

“Today we executed only half the game plan. Second set we saw our youth really do their jobs. With our 3 freshmen on the floor, Routier, Kearns and Green, we saw a lot of positive work being done. We were up 24-23 with a serve to win and again our concentration waned and we missed. Again and again today our focus on the basic plan fell off. Time to get back into the gym”

Leah Mousseau hit 12 kills while Haleigh Kearns had 10.

The Thunderwolves play at home next weekend against York on Feb 3 for their Think Pink game followed by a game on Feb 4 against Nipissing.
