‘Wolves Fall to Marauders, 3-0

Hugh Mullally | Volleyball (W)

The women’s volleyball ended their road trip Sunday with a 3-0 loss the McMaster Marauders (17-25, 16-25, 21-25), thus posting a 1-2 record on the weekend, their overall record now standing at 3-4.

After McMaster took the first set, an 8-0 run staked the Marauders to a healthy lead to open the second set, that deficit proving fatal for the Thunderwolves in the frame. Nothing was going Lakehead’s way, and after a serve went through the hands of libero Alyssa Genereux, coach Chris Green was forced into a timeout with his team trailing 13-4.

“When you’re a young and developing team, you have to take your wins where you can,” commented coach Chris Green following the game. “Today was a win for this group of young ladies, in some aspects. After yesterday’s frustrating game that slipped away, as coaches we were concerned as to how we would handle a CIS top 10 team. The girls came out with a great passion and energy and gave a great effort against Mac.”

In the third set Lakehead made some adjustments and consequently more plays down the stretch, but were unable to force a fourth set.

Olivia Bowman was Lakehead’s kill and dig leader with 5 and 7, respectively, to go with 3 blocks. Jessica Korchak also made 3 blocks against McMaster attackers.

Setter Vanessa Masters made 18 assists.

Green continues, “Other than some small negative runs the Thunderwolves battled hard. We got a good feel for them but just ran out of time to make a big difference. The performance today proved to themselves that they’re a good team and that consistency is the missing piece of the puzzle. We’ll train hard and smart for the next two weeks to ready for Guelph and Ottawa.”

Lakehead has next weekend off then will travel to Guelph for two games (Nov 26-27), followed by a third against the Gee-Gees in Ottawa (Nov 29).
